S8 Guest Column: "The Fall of Rudy"

Tedhighway reviews the tribal dynamics in Episode 2 of Survivor: All-Stars.

S8 Guest Column:

All-Stars continues to excite fans with the second episode. I've got to say, being the big "Survivor" fanatic like I am, this whole series is truly surreal at the moment. I never imagined that I would actually see Richard playing against Rupert or Colby going head to head with Lex. In my mind, every episode that comes our way is going to be quite an event.

Rudy Boesch, the crusty former Navy SEAL, was the latest casualty. This episode was moreso a dedication to the man himself. It's quite an accomplishment for a seventy-five year old man to come out and compete against people that are only a third of his age.

Everyone was amazed when he did this three years ago and came in third place, yet he decided to come back once more.
I'm a big Rudy fan, so this kind of stings. He still had the mental capacity to keep going yet he was a liability. After injuring his ankle, the Saboga tribe realized he was now a hindrance to the team.

The Sabogans had already lost Tina and they could not afford to get rid of the other former winner within the tribe, Ethan Zohn. He is too much of a tribal and challenge asset. The group had to let the old vet. go.

At tribal council, Rudy's exit even brought tears to the castaways' eyes. He received three votes from Jenna Lewis, Jerri Manthey, and Ethan. Rupert, on the other hand, did not for Rudy. He had pledged his allegiance to the man in the first episode and he refused to break that pact.

Moving on, the Mogo Mogo tribe has been relatively quite so far. It's surprising seeing the personalities within the tribe. Sure, Richard Hatch has been a huge force within the first two episodes, yet the others have not. I believe we will be seeing alot of Colby, Lex, Kathy, and the gang in the upcoming weeks.

Chapera is a tribe filled with unique personalities. First you have Boston Rob Mariano, who always welcomes the opportunity to speak his mind. There is Big Tom Buchanon, the Virginia goat farmer that loves to dance and demolish the English language. There is Sue Hawk, the tough-talking truck driver that tells it like it is and gets in your face if she wants to.

There is Alicia Caloway, the buffed up fitness trainer that waves her finger in your face. Then you have Rob Cesternino, the comedian and schemer of the group who loves to shoot out one-liners. There is one piece that really doesn't fit in with this puzzle, and that's the quiet Amber Brkich. Despite Amber's presence, Chapera has already become a source of entertainment, and I believe that's not about to stop.

I have decided to add another element to my column. This week I will begin "The Highway Countdown", where I will list the remaining castaways.

They will be in order from who is in the best position to the person who is in the worst position. Here we go.

THE HIGHWAY COUNTDOWN

1. Kathy Vavrick-O'Brien - Kathy has managed to put herself in a great position within the Mogo Mogo tribe. She's able to bond with both the men and the women. I think we should be seeing Kathy for a long time, and that's why she gets my number one ranking.

2. Amber Brkich - On a tribe filled with loudmouths, plotters, and schemers, Amber is flying low under the radar. She's just a small blip on the screen. She is not a target and she has already made an alliance with Boston Rob.

3. Colby Donaldson - The Texas cowboy is a definite challenge asset so he's not going anywhere for a while, and he seems to be well-respected. I look for him to do good things.

4. Lex van den Berghe - Lex is in the exact same position as Colby.

5. Rupert Boneham - Rupert brings in food and is a huge challenge asset. What more could you ask for.

6. Shii Ann Huang - Shii Ann seems to be keeping her mouth shut at Mogo Mogo and this is a good thing with all of the alpha males running around. Watch out though, if her conversation with Rich is any indication, she could possibly be headed for a mistake.

7. Tom Buchanon - Big Tom is the source of entertainment for the Chapera tribe and seems to be getting along with everyone.

8. Rob Mariano - Boston Rob has an alliance partner in Amber and seems close to Tom. He is too much of an asset to get rid of just yet, but his mouth could be his undoing.

9. Jenna Lewis - Jenna has managed to force her way into a power position over at Saboga. She has Jerri firmly on her side, and she has managed to make Ethan the outsider.

10. Rob Cesternino - Robasu is laying low and that is his best strategy at the moment. These people know his reputation of backstabbing and changing alliances at the drop of a hat. He's playing smart right now.

11. Alicia Caloway - Alicia has managed to offend Boston Rob, but she's to much of a good thing to let go. The Chapera tribe needs her strength.

12. Jerri Manthey - She has managed to align with Jenna Lewis, but her evil reputation could get the best of her.

13. Jenna Morasca - The Amazon winner is on a tribe filled with people that are work horses. She could find herself on the outside relatively quick.

14. Ethan Zohn - Ethan is a marked man on the Saboga tribe thanks to being a winner, but in order to compete, the four member team need his strength.

15. Richard Hatch - This was obvious. Richard has the biggest target on his back. Everyone wants to take down the original winner and I don't look for him to last long.

16. Susan Hawk - Sue gets the last slot for not being a team player. She is isolating herself from the group and appears to have made enemies.
