S7 Guest Column: "The Dead Grandmother"

A review of Episode 10, of Survivor: Pearl Islands.

S7 Guest Column:

Well I guess when Jeff Probst says that anything is possible in the game of "Survivor", he means it. The one and only Jon Dalton strikes again as he single-handedly told the biggest lie in "Survivor" history.

It was the usual family visit reward challenge and Jon took full advantage of it. Every other member of the Balboa tribe had either a husband, boyfriend, or mother come to visit, yet Dalton had his pal "Thunder D".

In a move that was planned before the game even started,
Jon's friend informed Dalton himself that his grandmother had passed away and that was the reason she was not there.

Everyone else then began to either cry or try to comfort Jon. The other members of the tribe even threw the challenge in order for Jon to spend a day at camp
with his friend whil he gets more details on the tragic events.

The other tribe members are then informed that they will be spending the night at an entirely different beach.

When Jon and his pal arrive at camp, it is finally revealed that his grandmother is fine and she is, indeed, not dead at all.

Jon planned the big lie in advance in order to gain sympathy from his fellow tribe members and hopefully help him get farther along in the game.

The tactic is kind of a low-blow, yet it is not outside of the boundaries of the rules in "Survivor". In fact, I believe this lie to be a great move, strategy wise. It may not be the nicest or the friendliest thing to do, but it does help Jon's stature in the game.

Also, Chrita is accused of sabotaging the tribe by throwing out all the fish that was caught the previous day. Once outcast Burton accuses her, everyone else hops on the bandwagon.

Sandra then reveals in a confessional that it was actually her that threw out the fish because she was upset that her ally Rupert was voted out, and she did not feel that her fellow tribesmates should eat the food that Rupert
caught after they had just got rid of him.

Good move on Sandra's part. I wouldn't tell anyone either, even if they were accusing my friend and ally. When you are in the minority you have to do whatever it takes to get by and survive three more days, even if that means betraying friends.

Christa, on the other hand, is in a bad position. She was not really well liked by the majority of the tribe anyways, and if you add the fish incident on top of that, then you have a weak and powerless Christa.

Hardly on the show Darrah, meanwhile, claims immunity after host Jeff Probst mistakenly announced Burton as the winner of the puzzle challenge.

Everyone scrambles after the challenge as alliances are formed, broken, and put back together. Sandra initially gets Darrah and Tijuana to side with herself and Christa in order to oust Burton.

After Sandra informs Jon that Burton is leaving, he convinces Sandra and Christa to
keep Burton and vote out Tijuana. Jon believes Burton is a great ally and will potentially help him out along the way. Jon even swears on his dead grandmother to Sandra.

In the end, Tijuana goes home and we are left with six. The game is really up in the air with Jon, Burton, Lil, Sandra, Christa, and Darrah.

The best move for anybody would probably be to take an outcast with them to the final two. I do not believe that anyone will vote for someone that has already been voted out of the game to actually win it.

Who's looking good: Jon. Jonny Fairplay controls everything that is going on right now, and when left with six people, that is a great position. Only Brian Heidik and Richard Hatch can say they had this kind of control that Jon does now, and both men went on to win their respective seasons.

Who's looking bad: Christa, Burton, and Darrah. Darrah is the last Morgan tribe member and has no allies.

Burton is a challenge threat and walking target. Christa is on the outs with most of her tribesmates. To flip a coin, I'll say Christa goes next.
