The Hollywood Reporter Reports:"The Matrix Reloaded" launched in 13 overseas nations and filled its box office clip with an estimated $31.9 million.
Combined with an estimated $135.8 million from the first four days of its North American release, the worldwide total for "Reloaded" stands at about $167.7 million. While not as massive a day-and-date release as Fox's "X2: X-Men United," which opened a couple of weeks earlier in a record 93 markets, "Reloaded" posted impressive numbers across the board.
"The initial results from our first wave of international releases are nothing short of fantastic, and we are looking forward to enormous numbers next weekend, when we launch in 48 more countries," Veronika Kwan-Rubinek, Warners president of international theatrical distribution, said Sunday.
The nation in which the film posted its largest international box office gross was France, where "Reloaded" pulled in an estimated $12 million during a three-day weekend, usually a five-day frame. All the same, "Reloaded" opened 7% better than the five-day opening gross racked up in that nation last year by Sony's "Spider-Man," as well as providing the sixth-biggest U.S. opening there.
In Australia, "Reloaded" shot down an estimated $7.3 million during three days of a usual four-day weekend. The sci-fi actioner posted the third-biggest debut in that market, behind "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" and "Star Wars: Episode II -- Attack of the Clones," both of which enjoyed four-day weekends.
In the Netherlands, "Reloaded" downloaded $1.8 million after three days of a usual four-day weekend. Regardless, the film posted the third-biggest opening of all time in that nation.
The good news continued in Taiwan, where, despite the impact of the SARS (news - web sites) epidemic, "Reloaded" captured an estimated $1.8 million. In nearby Thailand, the actioner collected $1.7 million, the biggest opening weekend for a U.S. film in that nation.
Turkey contributed $1.7 million, marking that nation's biggest single-film weekend of all time with 460,448 admissions.
"Reloaded" picked up $1.3 million in Belgium after three days of a usual five-day weekend. Even with that handicap, the film posted the fifth-biggest opening in that nation.
